Jesse Lineberry, a member of the Black Hollow Junior Anglers and Joshua McCourt a of the Foggy Bottom Junior Anglers qualified for the last two positions on the BASS Federation Nation of Virginia Fishing Team for 2010 in a close competition held on Smith Mountain Lake on August 1, 2010. Lineberry is an experienced senior member and McCourt is fishing his second year.
Lineberry started in the CastingKids program and has worked his way up through various competitions to reach his goal of making the state team. McCourt is a relative new-comer to the sport and this is his first major win.
In a competition with weights that were separated by ounces, Kyle Maschal finished second in the junior division closely followed by Jeremy Lineberry. In the senior division, Conner Harrison finished second followed closely by Jacob Bush in third. Big fish winners were Hunter Axt in the junior division and Ethan Craft in the senior division. Final Two State Team Members? The adult fishing team is now set. Contracts have been signed and the homework is being done in preparation for the Mid Atlantic Championship in Delaware. Meanwhile our junior anglers have been narrowed down to the final 24 anglers who are anxiously awaiting the state championship to be held on Smith Mountain Lake on August 1, 2010. While the adults have no off limits, the junior anglers have an entire week prior to the event.

Only two will advance to the Mid Atlantic and become the final members of the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation of Virginia fishing team. While every one of the junior anglers has demonstrated skill and tenacity as winners of one of the qualifying tournaments, only two can move on to Delaware. This year we have junior anglers who are extremely competitive and some have had the experience of being state champions in past years.

The final 24 qualifiers are listed. The big question is “Who will be the final two members of the state team for 2010?” Join us at Parkway Marina for the last qualifying event for the 2010 season.

Lake Anna Junior Qualifier for the state team championship
The junior angler qualifying event held at Lake Anna was coordinated by Becky Gore, academic advisor for Orange County high school this year in order to help our new youth director, Ralph “Dutch” Millsaps orient to our way of holding events. This will be a very tough act to follow as her team was huge and Tom Bresnehan made his signature burgers with other parents providing the rest of the food. There was also a home- made cake with the state logo on it. Even boat captains were rewarded for this event.
Orange County High School 4-H junior anglers can teach us all how to organize and conduct an event. The work that went into this event should go into our record books as the way to do it.

While all of the boat captains who volunteered on Lake Anna know the lake well, Christiana Bradley from the Bassmaster women’s trail volunteered to be a boat captain and her Geico wrapped boat was one of the many highlights of this event. Bradley is a master at marketing and was showing the junior anglers how to present themselves in a professional manner in addition to teaching them how to be competitive. How lucky we are to have this kind of support in Virginia.
There were numerous sponsors for this event and one that is new to us is Greentops Sporting Goods. Again the junior anglers showed their marketing skills and Greentops banners as well as Lowrance were prominently featured at this event. For the aspiring angler, the junior anglers can teach us a lot about how to be successful.
Moving on to the state championship from Lake Anna will be Dawson McGovern, Tray Morrison, and David Meade from the junior division. In the senior division, Conner Harrison, Nicholas Bodsford, and Jake Heuple will advance to the championship. Junior anglers from the north and the southern divisions have one more opportunity to qualify for the state championship. Last year a junior angler had the largest bag of fish for the entire Mid-Atlantic competition. Our junior anglers are really important. Complete standings are posted on their standings tab.

Mark your calendar. The Orange County High School Junior Anglers are already looking ahead to 2011. If you missed it last year they went all out for their fishing and sportsman show and it is worth the trip to Orange. The date is February 18-20, 2011. This is earlier than last year and is ahead of the fishing season.
Once upon a time 12 anglers and one alternate made up the state team. Times have really changed. Now we have 12 anglers, 2 junior anglers and a team captain who serves as the boat captain for the junior anglers. He also gets to take his boat and prefish for them. This change has created new challenges and the fact remains that the state team is not complete until after the state qualifying event for the junior anglers. While the adults share in the winnings, the junior anglers can make the difference between a win and a loss for the reward of being a part of the team.
Completing the adult portion of the team are Steve “Cheeseburger” Roberts who won the event. Jeff Salmon finished second but he had already qualified Mr. BASS. Rick Smith finished third. Allan Chenault finished fourth and qualified as a boater. Tyler Farmer, Rob Wells, David Clements, and Ricky Young qualified as non boaters. Keith Roberts filled the eight spot from this event as Jeff Salmon had already qualified. Roberts will take the position previously held by Salmon.
The rest of the team is made up of Wayne Burchett, Jerry Wyatt, Jeff Lugar, and Cavin Young. While adult qualification is complete for the year, the junior anglers are the unknown and they only have a couple of weeks to get ready for the event. This is the time that the state team needs to start pulling together and help the junior anglers become more competitive. The next event is on Leesville Lake. Since this team is made up of a lot of first time qualifiers it would be nice to see you pulling together now. I hope to see you at Leesville.
